Cattywampus
The IKEA instructions promised a “sleek, minimalist bookshelf,” but Phoebe’s living room looked like a timber yard explosion. She had ignored the diagrams, confident that her intuition surpassed Swedish engineering.
By midnight, the finished product stood cattywampus against the wall. The left side gently soared toward the ceiling while the right slumped toward the floor, creating a bookshelf that functioned more like a playground slide.
Phoebe placed a single, heavy encyclopedia on the top shelf. It immediately accelerated downward, launched off the edge, and took out a floor lamp.
“Modern art, maybe?” she whispered, refusing to admit this structural defeat.
